PGNiG, also known as Polish Oil and Gas Company (POGC) operates in Pakistan as a branch office of PGNiG Group, Poland which is majority owned by the Polish Government.

PGNiG started its activity in Pakistan in July 1997 and has conducted exploration activity as Operator on four concession blocks namely:

  • Block No. 2870-1, Khanpur West (1997 – 2000)
  • Block No. 2869-8, Sabzal (1997 – 2001)
  • Block No. 3069-2, Mekhtar (1998-2000)
  • Block No. 2869-10, Sabzal South (2001 – 2003)

PGNiG also held 40% Working Interest in Block No. 2568-2, Nawabshah, Sindh as non-operator.

From 2005 till now, PGNiG as an Operator, together with PPL as a JV partner, conducts exploration and appraisal activity on Kirthar concession block No 2667-7. In 2009 PGNiG drilled Rehman-1 well which discovered “Tight Gas” reservoir in Pab formation within Kirthar Block located in District Dadu (Sindh).

PGNiG has so far invested over US$100 million in Pakistan including construction of over 50 km of gas pipelines and Rehman EWT facility. PGNiG on June 25, 2013 has commenced gas production from Rehman reservoir. This is first-ever gas production from unconventional so called “Tight Gas” formation in Pakistan. The current daily production during EWT stands at +10 mmcfd from two wells to be increased up-to around ~100 mmcfd during commercial production on success of EWT. That would require use of advanced technology (horizontal wells, multiple transverse hydraulic fracturing, etc) and involve over US$ 300 million at the full field development stage.
